Dragon introduced an exciting new 1/35 scale Type 95 “Ha-Go” Early Production in 2012 and it was an instant hit. Now one more family gem is coming this year. This time it’s a Hokuman version, with ‘Hokuman’ being the Japanese term for northern China. This Type 95 light tank was used in northern China in combat against Soviet forces. Weighing just 7.4 tonnes, the “Ha-Go” was designed primarily as an infantry support weapon. Indeed, it was the most common light tank used by the IJA, with about 2,300 units manufactured. It had a crew of three, and the main armament was a Type 94 37mm gun. Its maximum speed was 45km/h. Although it’s a small vehicle, Dragon’s new 1/35 scale kit is brimming with detail, something facilitated by the widespread use of slide molds. In fact, every single sprue employs slide molds, which is an astounding achievement! For example, the turret is of single-piece construction, with the multi-directional slide mold allowing the rivets to be rendered. The lower hull comes as one piece and has the correct armor panels and bolts on it. The upper hull is also one piece. This kit includes all the new parts needed to create a Hokuman version. Perhaps the most obvious difference is the bell crank suspension, which appears ‘upside down’ compared to the previous kit, while a new third small wheel is included within the bogies. Dragon’s new 1/35 scale model depicts a 7.5cm PaK 40/4 auf RSO vehicle. What differentiates it from an earlier release is the inclusion of a special canvas cover to protect the fighting compartment. Given the harsh winter conditions the vehicle was expected to operate in, this canvas cover was much welcomed by crews. Of course, the canvas also helped disguise the true potent nature of the vehicle’s weapon system. The tarpaulin is made of DS, the perfect medium to capture the cover’s wrinkles and texture. Other brand new parts on the kit are the seats and PaK pedestal/mount. For those wishing to create an Eastern Front diorama scene, this RSO and its secretive firepower will be irresistible! This 1/35 scale kit is obviously based on the company’s earlier release, but the bonus this time around is the floating pontoons. The front pontoon is composed of two halves (Late Production) that are brand new toolings. Other parts such as the conning tower, rudder and hydroscope suitable for its amphibious role are also fully detailed. There’s widespread use of slide molds to enable crisp detail. The one-piece upper-hull and lower-hull components, for example, are both slide molded. It also features highly detailed and easy-to-assemble DS tracks. This creates many possibilities for dioramas and modelers. This Type 2 with pontoons is thus a unique item from the Pacific theater of war, making this kit invaluable for model-makers. The box-top illustration shows four Soviet soldiers dressed for winter combat. They wear uniform gear such as greatcoats, sheepskin jackets, toques, mittens/gloves and fur boots. The action poses are very suitable for depicting a combat scene in the snow and ice, and the sculpting of the plastic is sharp and realistic. The soldiers also wield weapons suitable for this time period of 1941, including Mosin-Nagant rifles and a DP28 light machine gun. Of course the figures could also find application in a different setting (in the winter fighting against Finland, for example) so they will prove very versatile. The gun mount is a completely new tooling, and while it may be termed Behelfslafette, it is anything but simple in this kit. Parts of the original kit are combined seamlessly with sophisticated and refined parts of the new base. The gun lock is also brand new. At the same time, the kit retains all the luxury features of the earlier release such as a working equilibrator mechanism, an authentic gun recoil action, the option of three styles of gun shield and an aluminum gun barrel. The latest 1/35 scale figure set from Dragon depicts four members of this famed division from various parts of the Eastern Front. Each figure features different aspects of the “Das Reich” Division’s uniforms and weaponry. One soldier is dressed in winter clothing while others wear uniforms more appropriate to warmer weather. Notably, one figure is a member of a divisional armored unit. Their weapons include ubiquitous MP40 machine pistols, plus an M42 flare pistol and a captured Soviet PPSh-41 submachine gun. The weapons and personal equipment of these soldiers are all made to the highest Gen2 standards. The three soldiers are well sculpted in greatcoats and caps, suggesting an autumn or winter scene somewhere on the frontlines. Dragon has followed up its earlier RSO kit mounting a PaK 40 gun with a 1/35 scale kit of the RSO/03. The only elements borrowed from the earlier kit are the chassis and running gear. Other parts such as the distinctive cab and cargo bed are completely new toolings in keeping with the redesigned RSO/03. Brand new, too, is the Deutz engine. To add to the appeal of this sharply detailed kit, it comes with Dragon’s acclaimed 5cm PaK 38 antitank cannon. This set thus creates a duo that was commonly seen on battlefields on the Eastern Front as antitank weapons and supplies were ferried to the places they were needed most.
