The latest 1/72 model kit from Dragon is a Panther Ausf.G variant fitted with steel road wheels. Steel-rimmed “silent bloc” wheels of 800mm diameter, which saved on dwindling supplies of rubber, were introduced in a very limited number of vehicles produced by MAN in September 1944, and again in a batch dating from March-April of 1945 (introduced from chassis no. 121052). Such steel wheels had been successfully used on late-model Tiger I tanks and also on the Tiger II. These steel road wheels were also to be standardized on the updated Panther Ausf.F, a tank that never reached fruition. The new Dragon kit of such a Panther Ausf.G with steel wheels has re-engineered features, the most obvious example of which is the new steel road wheels, which are accurately reproduced in plastic. The inclusion of these wheels gives the Panther a whole new look. The rest of the tank lives up to Dragon’s uncompromising standards of quality and engineering excellence too, with widespread use of slide-mold technology. As Dragon has never produced a kit of this halftrack family before, the body and chassis are brand new. This allowed the design team to really go to town and produce the ultimate detail in this kit, all the while utilizing high-quality engineering for accurate parts. It’s fully detailed, including internal components like the engine and gearbox. Of course, it also makes use of Dragon’s world-famous 2cm FlaK38 kit. Worthy of special mention is the use of slide molds on the front hood to permit the louvers on the hood sides to be fully open. The size of the model is simply overwhelming - more than 300mm long! The double track runs are made from brand new DS tracks, and the outer tracks can be detached just like the real ones should a modeler decide to opt for this configuration. The gun barrel is produced in aluminum. This was a monster of a tank, but Dragon has been careful to fill it out with sharp detail and easy-to-assemble components. Interestingly, this is also the very first 1/35 scale Tiger I Mid-Production type to appear in a Dragon box. The Tiger I is an iconic tank of WWII, and its legendary status extends well beyond the limited number of 1,355 that were built. Building upon Dragon’s masterly 1/35 Tiger kits previously released, this newest big cat comes with a full coating of Zimmerit produced to an extremely high quality in terms of the pattern and scale effect. The unique Zimmerit texture is different to that found on Late Tiger. The kit receives many new parts such as the turret, upper hull, rear plate and road wheels so it can accurately depict a Mid-Production variant. An Ausf.A variant is the latest subject to join the 1/35 scale ranks of Dragon’s Panzer II family. The model features all the necessary elements to create an Ausf.A tank. Dragon is releasing a 1/35 scale figure set depicting this battle. The four soldiers are French infantrymen, making this Dragon’s first WWII French infantry subject! The set depicts four Frenchmen defending their positions on the outskirts of Sedan. They wear typical uniforms of the day, and carry suitable weapons such as the Fusil mitrailleur modèle 1924 M29 (FM 24/29) light machine gun, plus MAS Modèle 36 rifles. One of the officers is even smoking a pipe, giving this figure a nice touch of character. The poses are well designed, and their molding is sharp and realistic. U.S.S. Princeton CVL-23. Dragon has launched a fantastic new large-scale ship down the slipway from its workshop. The new kit is a 1/350 scale rendition of USS Princeton (CVL-23), an Independence-class light aircraft carrier of the US Navy (USN). This ship was originally laid down as a Cleveland-class light cruiser, but it received a new role and was eventually commissioned on 25 February 1943. Its first combat tour was in the Pacific from August onwards in the region of places like Tarawa. Its next combat tour commenced in January 1944, and in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Princeton’s aircraft contributed 30 kills. The 13,000-ton carrier subsequently supported landings in Leyte in the Philippines in October 1944, where she was attacked by a lone Yokosuka D4Y “Judy” dive bomber. This Japanese aircraft dropped just a single bomb, but it was sufficient to cause a series of explosions and fires. Tragically, by evening the carrier was at the bottom of the Leyte Gulf. A total of 108 sailors lost their lives but 1,361 crewmen were rescued by other USN vessels. This new Smart Kit is logically based on Dragon’s earlier USS Independence (CVL-22), but it features numerous new parts. These include the port antiaircraft gun platform, the island walls and radar installation. The stern antiaircraft gun platform has been revised too. There are also a number of new photo-etched parts specifically for Princeton; these include radar antenna components. For greater versatility, modelers can elect to build a full-hull version or a waterline hull. To help populate this large ship, there are 18 appropriately scaled crewmen figures, as well as vehicles such as aircraft tugs. The complement of twelve aircraft is reproduced in transparent plastic, which allows easier painting and portrayal of cockpit glazing.
