The Army of the Southern states was formed in 1861. The largest contingent was formed by men from Virginia, most of whom were volunteers and not professional soldiers. The Legion's equipment after the Marian reform was standardized and issued by the State. Legionnaires of this period wore a lorica hamata, reinforced on the shoulders, and were equipped with semi-rectangular shields. The Legion, with its extraordinary heavy infantry troops, was the decisive factor in battles. It is worth mentioning that riding a horse and fighting on horseback was not easy, as stirrups weren't used yet. Roman cavalrymen were often auxiliary troops recruited from allies during military campaigns, and their duty was to defend the flanks of the Legion.
