The four German figures contained in the set are all distinctly dressed and armed. Their uniforms reflect the wide variety of gear that was worn in this mid-war period. One of them is fully equipped for winter combat as he’s wearing a camouflaged snowsuit, while another has a typical camouflage smock. They also carry a range of weapons that fit this stage of the war, including an MG34 machine gun, MP40 machine pistol and Kar 98k rifle. The poses all possess a convincingly authentic look and they’ll slot into a wide range of dioramas or vignettes with ease. For example, taking a swig from a water bottle or loading an ammo clip into a rifle were commonplace for soldiers, but such actions are rarely offered in 1/35 scale figures. The 88mm antiaircraft Flugabwehrkanone (Flak) was one of the major successful cannons of the Second World War. The Luftwaffe deployed it as German territory defence against enemy air raids, while the Wermacht inside the artillery antiaircraft divisions. Every Wermacht division has equipped with 8 88mm and 12 20mm units. General Rommel was one of the first ones to use the Flak 88 during the May 1940 France campaign in a different role compared to it original design purposes. The Flak 88 became more famous and feared antitank cannon in force with the Axis tropes in the Second World War. During the defence of Halfaya Pass in Northern Africa, in a few minutes, a single Wermacht Flak 88 battery destroyed 11 of the 12 English tanks sent against the German’s positions. The pass became well known in-between the English tank man as Hellfire pass. The Flak 88 was in force throughout the end of the war on all fronts with its double antiaircraft and antitank role. Dragon has created a “killer kit” with a 1/35 scale version of this important tank destroyer! It’s based on the company’s Panzer IV Smart Kit family, but it boasts a great many new parts. As a Smart Kit, there’s a one-piece lower hull, convenient Magic Tracks and on-vehicle tools featuring crisp detail. The fighting compartment is made by slide mold so that no multipart assembling is necessary. The schurzen side screens follow the same design of those used on the Panzer IV J Late Production kit (Item No.6575), these having already attracted praise from modelers. Of special interest, too, is the MP44 Vorsatz “P”. This mounted weapon with a curved barrel could be used to protect blind-spots not covered by the mounted MG42 machine gun. The gun breech is fully represented, and it can be viewed through the open roof hatches. This Panzer IV L/70(A) was announced earlier in 2011, and the wait has been well worth it!
