Pak 40 AT Gun with 6 crew figures 8.8 cm Flak 37 AA Gun On December 16th, 1944 the German Army launched through the thick Ardennes’ forest ( in Belgium ) a great offensive which had the code name “ Wacht am Rhein” ( Operation guarding the Rhine ). During this operation the town of Bastogne and its surroundings where encircled by the German troops. Inside the pocket around 15.000 American soldiers stood up to the repeated assaults of the German army for approximately ten days. The legendary resistance was that of the US 101st Airborne division inside the town. On December 22nd the General von Lüttwitz , who was the German commander, submitted a demand for surrender to the encircled units. The answer of the American commander in Bastogne, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe was “NUTS”. Then, Germans renew their attacks trying to occupy the city but without getting results. On December 26th some soldiers of the General George Patton’s Third Army reached the besieged troops, breaking the siege and evacuating the wounded. Towards the later Seventies the need of increate fire power of U.S. self-propelled guns led to the development of an 203 mm gun with extended barrel. The M-110 A2 has considerable improvements compared to its predecessors M-107 and M-110 A1 and is used by the U.S. Army and many NATO countries. The 203 mm gun has a firing range of more than 36 km and can be used with conventional grenades as well as nuclear ammunition. M-110’s were widely used by Israel during the Lebanon crisis in the Eighties. During the Gulf war the allies used M-110’s too. M47 Patton This second version of the Patton series was developed upon request of the US Forces engaged in the Korean War. It went into production with American Locomotive Corporation in 1950 and saw its first action in korea. Compared to the M-46 and older predecessor, the M-47 showed some important improvements, such as a stabilizing unit for the weapons and encreased firing capacity.Although it had come out a little to play a decisive part on the Korean War theatre, this vehicle proved so versatile that the US soon furnished all NATO armies with it, among them those of the German Federal Republic, Italy, France and others. 13,00 €On 16th December, 1944, the German forces moved through the forests of the Ardennes, in Belgium, to attach the First U.S. Army. This was the Wehrmacht's last offensive on the western front before the final surrender in 1945. The “Wacht am Rhein” plan envisaged, on the part of General Von Rundstedt , the use of many elite units of Wehrmacht and of Waffen SS. The climax of the offensive was the siege of Bastogne, on December 21st, 1944. The town was defended by the 101st Airborne Division.
