The new 1/72 scale item is a British tank – the famous Churchill. The Churchill, referred to officially as the Tank, Infantry, Mk IV (A22), was named after the British prime minister at the time of its design in WWII. The tank was heavily armored and it featured a long chassis with long track runs that enabled it to cross difficult terrain. The first Churchills were hastily churning off Vauxhall production lines in June 1941, within a year of the tank’s design in the aftermath of the humiliating Allied defeat in Europe. Dragon’s model portrays a Churchill Mk IV tank, a variant that featured a cast turret instead of the all-welded turret found on the visually similar Mk III. Its main armament was a QF 6 pounder gun. Weighing in at approximately 40 tonnes, the Churchill had a particularly slow top speed. The Mk IV was the most numerically common model of the Churchill, with 1,622 tanks produced. As the first Churchill kit from Dragon, the tank utilizes brand new moldings. Slide molds allow the upper hull and lower hull to each be made in one piece. This makes construction more straightforward and accurate. The suspension on the Churchill is complicated, but the kit designers have cleverly engineered the suspension system in a way that’s easy to assemble. The cast turret is made in one piece via multi-directional slide molds, and it perfectly captures the five-sided shape of the Mk IV turret. The muzzle of the 6 pounder gun is hollow thanks also to slide molding. The 88mm antiaircraft Flugabwehrkanone (Flak) was one of the major successful cannons of the Second World War. The Luftwaffe deployed it as German territory defence against enemy air raids, while the Wermacht inside the artillery antiaircraft divisions. Every Wermacht division has equipped with 8 88mm and 12 20mm units. General Rommel was one of the first ones to use the Flak 88 during the May 1940 France campaign in a different role compared to it original design purposes. The Flak 88 became more famous and feared antitank cannon in force with the Axis tropes in the Second World War. During the defence of Halfaya Pass in Northern Africa, in a few minutes, a single Wermacht Flak 88 battery destroyed 11 of the 12 English tanks sent against the German’s positions. The pass became well known in-between the English tank man as Hellfire pass. The Flak 88 was in force throughout the end of the war on all fronts with its double antiaircraft and antitank role. Among the vanguard is a Late-Production Tiger I and an accompanying set of crewmen. The German Tiger I is one of the most recognizable tanks of WWII. With its thick armor and potent 8.8cm gun, it terrorized enemy soldiers and tankers. Dragon has produced a 1/72 scale Late-Production variant of this formidable AFV, and what’s special about the plastic model is the finely textured Zimmerit coating. The pre-molded Zimmerit is produced to an astounding level of craftsmanship, and it fortunately saves modelers the burden of having to apply the coating themselves. The Tiger I includes sharply detailed components, and it will be warmly welcomed as it sets a new benchmark for quality in this scale. As a special bonus, the kit includes a set of ‘tank ace’ figures. These figures have been downsized from a well-known 1/35 scale figure set, but they’re still remarkably detailed. The five figures are brand new toolings, and the crewmen can be adapted to many different dioramas, theaters or time periods, as selected by modelers. The figures may be grouped together on a Tiger as indicated in the box-top art, or they can be mix and matched with any other German tank type.
