The quartet is notable in the variety of uniforms, accoutrements and weapons that they possess. No longer were they wearing the orderly and well-tailored field gray uniforms of the blitzkrieg period. Instead, the soldiers in this set here wear camouflage smocks, a Fallschirmjäger jumpsuit and even one in a special Hitler Jugend (“Hitler Youth”) winter uniform. Their collection of weapons also reflects the frenetic late-war period. In evidence there’s an MP 44 assault rifle, Kar 98k rifle, Gewehr 43 semi-automatic rifle and FG 42 rifle as used by elite paratroopers. The HJ member is also carrying a Panzerfaust 100m, a single-shot anti-tank rocket produced in quantity from September 1944 onwards. Dragon’s newest 1/35 scale figure set depicts some German defenders of the Gustav Line. The set has four Gebirgsjäger, or mountain infantrymen/soldiers. Gebirgsjäger were specialist troops trained to operate in alpine areas. Their famous emblem is the edelweiss. These soldiers acquitted themselves well in Italy’s mountainous terrain, with the 5th Gebirgs-Division, for example, fighting in Italy from April 1943 through to the end of the war. Each of the mountain soldiers in the box is dressed in appropriate winter attire, and is vividly posed in a combat scenario. The set includes several unique pieces of equipment - one is newly tooled Mauser G41(M) semi-automatic rifle, while another is a brand new field telephone. For greater versatility, the signal gun held by one soldier can be shown being loaded with a flare cartridge. These four Gebirgsjäger are engaged in desperate defense of the Gustav Line in Italy, but they can also be adapted to any action selected by the modeler! A special feature of this set is a brand new sprue containing German gear such as ammo pouches, water bottles, bread bags plus standard weapons like the MP-40, Kar98K, MG34 and MG42. Dragon has followed up its earlier Mid-Production 1/35 scale kit of the Brummbär with another kit from the same period, though one featuring a coating of Zimmerit. Anti-magnetic layers of Zimmerit were applied to all vehicles prior to September 1944, so this inclusion makes the kit historically accurate. Modelers will also know that applying Zimmerit to a model is fraught with all kinds of challenges. Dragon’s latest kit thus offers convenience and accuracy, for the injection-molded texture and pattern is beautifully rendered using Dragon’s patented Zimmerit technique. This is obvious in the unique radial Zimmerit pattern on the front of the multi-directional slide-molded superstructure, for example. The kit incorporates separate metal side skirt elements that provide true-to-scale thickness and can be arranged to a modeler’s preferences. The brand new one-piece 40cm DS tracks were also especially prepared for the Mid-Production Brummbär. The distinctive Brummbär appeared in such battles as Kursk, Anzio, Normandy, Ardennes and the Warsaw Uprising, so it gives model-makers ample scope. Dragon’s latest 1/35 scale figure set features four elite German soldiers from the Brandenburg unit. These soldiers are the products of brand new toolings, and they are depicted in heavy combat with the defenders of Leros. The centerpiece of the set is a machine gun team equipped with an MG42 weapon. The gunner is using the shoulder of his assistant as a support as the team hasn’t had time to set up the weapon’s tripod yet. The folded tripod is included in the set. Meanwhile, the two other Brandenburgers dressed in appropriate camouflage smocks are preparing to move forward to capture more territory in Leros. Of interest, the set includes a German weapon container of the type that accompanied paratroopers during airdrops.
