It formed the backbone of innumerable American, British and Commonwealth armored formations. The popular Sherman was thus the logical choice when Dragon’s design team sought a subject for their next 1/6 scale plastic kit project. The specific Sherman variant selected is an M4A3 fitted with a 105mm gun. This type was a welded-hull tank powered by a 500hp Ford GAA V8 gasoline engine, and it mounted a 105mm gun suitable for the close-support role. The M4A3 was the preferred variant for the US Army, meaning it was widely used in WWII. This Sherman is a big release for Dragon in more ways than one. It's big on accurate details, and although some moldings are large, there is no deformation of parts. Modelers will find this satisfying kit fits together precisely. The road wheels rotate, and the tracks with individual links are well-designed and well-engineered so as to be both durable and realistic. For greater interest, the tracks come with new duckbills that were used to improve traction on soft ground. Owners can traverse the turret and elevate and depress the gun towards any target they select. The 105mm gun barrel is a newly tooled item. With this Sherman M4A3 105mm, the Allies have gained armored superiority in terms of 1/6 scale kits!

This called for more effective antiaircraft systems than Germany hitherto possessed. A new vehicle was planned – the 5.5cm Zwilling Flakpanzer V – though like the Flakpanzer V “Coelian”, it was never put into production. Development of the twin-barrel 5.5cm Zwilling was authorized on 8 May 1944 and it featured a special Krupp armored turret weighing 9.06 tonnes mounted on a Panther Ausf.G chassis. The antiaircraft vehicle would require a four-man crew and carry 104 ammo rounds. A wooden prototype turret was completed by January 1945, although further development of the 5.5cm Zwilling Flakpanzer V was eventually cancelled on 14 February. Per saperne di più

One solution was to employ captured weapons, and this is exactly what the Wehrmacht did with the French Canon de 75 mode`le 1897 field gun. Hundreds of these cannons manufactured by Schneider were captured during the Polish and French campaigns in 1939-40, and were subsequently pressed into German service as howitzers. However, faced with well-armored Soviet tanks in 1941, there was a desperate need for more powerful antitank weapons. Until more 7.5cm PaK 40 cannons could be produced, an expedient solution was to place gun barrels from the French Canon de 75 mode`le 1897 onto the carriage of a PaK 38. Fitted with a muzzle brake, the resulting weapon was called the 7.5cm PaK 97/38. This hybrid weapon could be used in the antitank role because it primarily fired HEAT rounds, which didn’t rely on velocity. A total of 3700+ PaK 97/38 cannons were produced in 1942-43, and many soldiered on until late in the war. Dragon has produced a 1/6 scale kit of this important German antitank weapon. Utilizing the split-trail gun carriage and double-layered gun shield from the previously issued 1/6 scale PaK 38 5cm antitank gun, these subassemblies have been matched with a brand new barrel and muzzle brake. The round-shaped breech is also notable for being a new tooling. Modelers are able to display the gun in either towed or firing mode. Furthermore, the gun can traverse, elevate and depress just like the original. This new kit is ready to take on any type of enemy armor, and it constitutes an instant diorama if suitable figures are added. Per saperne di più

This approximately 45-tonne medium tank represented a good balance of well-sloped armor protection, lethal firepower and able cross-country mobility, the design being inspired by the highly successful Russian T-34. Beginning in December 1942, a total of 842 Ausf.D examples were manufactured through to September 1943, at which time it was superceded by the improved Ausf.A. Its combat debut occurred during Operation Zitadelle in the titanic Battle of Kursk on the Eastern Front, and the Sd.Kfz.171 Panther fought bravely until the dying days of the Third Reich. Its 7.5cm KwK 42 L/70 cannon took a heavy toll on enemy armored vehicles whenever and wherever they were encountered. The Ausf.D is easily identified by the letterbox hatch opening for the glacis machine gun, pistol ports on the turret sides and a drum cupola. Dragon has a brand new 1/72 scale kit of the Panther Ausf.D Early Production, and modelers are certainly in for a treat with it! The plastic kit is an almost completely new tooling. In fact, the only item carried over from the Ausf.G released recently is the DS tracks! The upper hull is made as a single piece thanks to the clever use of slide molds. The lower hull tub has been formed the same way, thus ensuring a stable and accurate foundation for the rest of the build. All the appropriate characteristics of an Ausf.D variant are present. This Panther is full of delightful details…enough to have 1/72 scale model-makers purring with pleasure. Per saperne di più
