Operation Overlord was the Allied master plan to wrest Europe from the clutches of Germany. More than three million Allied troops were put ashore at Normandy from 6 June 1944 onwards. A slow, grinding battle ensued for the next two months as American, British and Canadian troops established their bridgehead against strong opposition. When the breakout from Normandy finally came, it was spectacular in its speed. By September there were three Allied army groups fighting against German forces, and General Patton was racing his forces across France to the very border of Germany. The Type 2 was the first amphibious tank used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). It was designed for Japanese landing forces performing amphibious invasions of Pacific islands that didn’t have regular port facilities. Production commenced in 1942 and a total of 184 Type 2 amphibious tanks were made, although the design was too late to participate in Japan’s island-hopping campaign. When used in water, large pontoons were attached to the glacis plate and rear deck to give it a top speed of 10km/h. These pontoons could be shed as soon as it reached land. The turret featured a 3.7cm Type 1 gun and coaxial Type 97 machine gun. Dragon’s 1/72 scale kit uses 100% new toolings. Fully utilizing Dragon’s technological expertise, the result is another masterpiece of accurate kit engineering. The upper hull and lower hull components are both made as single pieces thanks to the employment of slide molds. The kit is closely based on measurements taken from a surviving tank on Peleliu (present-day Palau). This ensures that the kit of the Type 2 tank without its flotation pontoons is accurately dimensioned. The Ka-Mi also includes DS tracks for easy assembly of the complicated track links. Dragon’s newest 1/35 scale figure set depicts some German defenders of the Gustav Line. The set has four Gebirgsjäger, or mountain infantrymen/soldiers. Gebirgsjäger were specialist troops trained to operate in alpine areas. Their famous emblem is the edelweiss. These soldiers acquitted themselves well in Italy’s mountainous terrain, with the 5th Gebirgs-Division, for example, fighting in Italy from April 1943 through to the end of the war. Each of the mountain soldiers in the box is dressed in appropriate winter attire, and is vividly posed in a combat scenario. The set includes several unique pieces of equipment - one is newly tooled Mauser G41(M) semi-automatic rifle, while another is a brand new field telephone. For greater versatility, the signal gun held by one soldier can be shown being loaded with a flare cartridge. These four Gebirgsjäger are engaged in desperate defense of the Gustav Line in Italy, but they can also be adapted to any action selected by the modeler! A special feature of this set is a brand new sprue containing German gear such as ammo pouches, water bottles, bread bags plus standard weapons like the MP-40, Kar98K, MG34 and MG42.
