he box-top illustration shows two Soviet soldiers dressed for winter combat with such uniform gear as a greatcoat, fur hats and a snowsuit. Their weapons include a Mosin-Nagant rifle and a ubiquitous PPSh-41 submachine gun. One Russian is smoking a cigarette during a lull in the fighting, and this classic pose makes this figure a suitable candidate for a standalone vignette. The two Germans are also outfitted to resist the severe weather conditions. One is delivering food supplies (bread, food container and water canteens) to the frontline while the other is firing an MP40 submachine gun. The interesting mix of action and at-rest poses are very suitable for depicting an Eastern Front scene in the snow and ice, and the plastic sculpting is sharp and realistic. As the Soviet T-34 tank rumbled along the snow-coated street, its steel track treads crumbled the rubble into powder. Lurking in the shadows, a figure raised his weapon and took careful aim at the monstrous steel hulk bearing down on him. Suddenly he fired, the Ofenrohr (“Stove Pipe”) emitting a large cloud of smoke. A rocket streaked towards the tank and penetrated its sloped armor, the vehicle clanking to a stop as flames and smoke erupted from its interior. The German tank hunter team quickly scuttled away to find a new position. This type of scene was repeated over and over as German defenses were inundated by Soviet and Allied tanks in the latter part of WWII. With a dire shortage of tanks and tank destroyers, one smaller but still effective German weapon was the Panzerschreck (“tank terror”) or Raketenpanzerbu"chse (“rocket tank rifle”, or RPzB). This antitank rocket launcher of 88mm caliber, from which the American bazooka was copied, was employed by infantry. Dragon’s newest figure set offers two Panzerschreck teams, one wearing winter uniforms and the other attired in summer uniforms. Their versatility allows them to be used for either Eastern or Western Front dioramas. As a Gen2 set, the figures are crisply detailed and have anatomically vivid poses. Likewise, their associated gear is sharply molded. Their RPzB 54 weapons with characteristic blast shields are amazingly detailed, the most accurate yet thanks to their Gen2 status. Such a scenario is commonly seen in photographs and newsreel clips from WWII, and Dragon’s newest set of 1/35 scale figures allows modelers to replicate this scene. The set, entitled ‘Winter Tank Riders 1943-44’, presents four individual figures especially designed and formulated to fit onto the hull of a Panzer IV. This makes them the ideal accessory for Dragon’s recently released Panzer IV Ausf.H (#6300). Clad in either parkas or greatcoats, the panzergrenadiers are all equipped for cold-weather combat on the bitterly contested Eastern Front. Dragon’s newest 1/35 scale kit depicts a vehicle heavily modified for desert operations by the SAS and LRDG. It is heavily loaded with weaponry different to the preceding kit release. While it still has a Vickers K twin machine gun up front, in the rear is a .50-cal machine gun. As before, jerry cans containing spare fuel and water, to allow reconnaissance missions deep behind the frontlines, are added. Even the complete engine is included, which allows a modeler to depict a maintenance scene. Also of great utility is this kit’s brand new two-man crew, showing SAS members in typical garb.
