The four soldiers are all very different as they belong to various units. There is a Reiter (“cavalryman”), a Feldgendarmerie (military policeman), a Panzer-Pionier (combat engineer), and an SS-Oberschutze (“senior private”) from the famed Totenkopf Division. They are all wearing different uniform items in keeping with their functions. The Feldgendarmerie, for example, is wearing the rubberized protective coat issued to motorcycle riders. He also wears the MP gorget on a chain around his neck. Each figure is fully equipped with weapons made to the very latest Gen 2 standards. The range of weaponry includes MP28 and MP38 submachine guns, a Kar98k rifle and a captured Czech machine gun. To help him do his job, the Panzer-Pionier also has a Rohrladung Stahl 3kg (explosive charge similar to a “Bangalore torpedo”) and Nb.K.39 smoke canister. The kit is a completely new tooling and is sold under the Smart Kit label. This means it goes together with minimum fuss and is easy to assemble. At the same time, superb engineering ensures there’s no loss of accuracy or simplification of detail. The delicacy of the castings can be seen in elements like the hand wheels. The howitzer can be displayed in either travel or combat modes, and the aluminum gun barrel with fine rifling detail can be elevated at different angles. The two wartime manufacturers of the small utility vehicle, Ford and Willys-Overland, produced a staggering total of 640,000 vehicles. This figure amounted to nearly 20% of all wheeled military vehicles built in the USA during the war. They were used in a multitude of functions by the US military, plus around 30% of all production was allocated to British and Soviet units via Lend Lease. Dragon is offering a novel version of this famous 1/4-Ton 4x4 Truck in 1/72 scale. Entitled “1/4-Ton 4x4 Armored Truck”, the plastic kit includes two complete vehicles that can be assembled to represent vehicles with armored plates added to the radiator grill and driver’s compartment to give greater protection against German small arms. These armor shields give the 1/4-Ton Truck a completely new appearance, with this vehicle type being commonly employed in the reconnaissance role. Despite being small in 1/72 scale, the models are highly detailed and Dragon’s well-known engineering excellence guarantees a satisfying build. Furthermore, the vehicles can be fitted with different weapons. Multiple armaments such as twin-mounted bazookas, a .50-cal machine gun or a .30-cal machine gun are available, and they can be mounted at the modeler’s discretion. The latest item features two complete antitank rifles that were used especially in the early days of WWII. One is the PzB 39 (the abbreviation stands for Panzerbuchse 39, or “armor-hunting rifle”). The PzB 39 was supposed to give infantrymen a lightweight weapon with which to tackle enemy tanks. It was 1.62m long and it weighed 12.6kg. By the time of the invasion of Russian in 1941, a total of 25,298 PzB 39s were in the hands of the infantry. It continued in use until 1944, but by then it was hopelessly outclassed when trying to penetrate thick enemy armor. One variant of the PzB 39 antitank rifle was the Granatbuchse 39 (GrB 39), this being a rifle grenade launcher created from 1942 onwards. The barrel was shortened and a firing cup attachment was threaded on. The GrB 39 could fire the same type of anti-personnel, light antitank and large-diameter antitank grenades used with the standard Kar 98k rifle. Both these weapons are contained in this kit set. They are made according to Dragon’s exacting standards in a precise 1/6 scale. Parts are cleverly broken down into components that assemble easily to produce an accurate replica of the PzB 39 and GrB 39. As a special bonus, this set also comes with a third weapon. The bonus weapon is a 2.7cm Sturmpistole, also referred to as a Walther Leuchtpistole. It was designed to fire small specially designed high-explosive grenades. It was fitted with a padded stock to reduce the shock on the firer’s arm. This light weapon was widely used, particularly on the Eastern Front, for anti-personnel duties.
