The quartet is notable in the variety of uniforms, accoutrements and weapons that they possess. No longer were they wearing the orderly and well-tailored field gray uniforms of the blitzkrieg period. Instead, the soldiers in this set here wear camouflage smocks, a Fallschirmjäger jumpsuit and even one in a special Hitler Jugend (“Hitler Youth”) winter uniform. Their collection of weapons also reflects the frenetic late-war period. In evidence there’s an MP 44 assault rifle, Kar 98k rifle, Gewehr 43 semi-automatic rifle and FG 42 rifle as used by elite paratroopers. The HJ member is also carrying a Panzerfaust 100m, a single-shot anti-tank rocket produced in quantity from September 1944 onwards. Known as the Neubau-Fahrzeug (“New Construction Vehicle”), it was not a success. Slow-moving and boasting multiple turrets, it was ill equipped for the type of rapid, mobile warfare that Blitzkrieg tactics required. For this reason, only five Neubau-Fahrzeug heavy tanks were built. The first two prototypes were manufactured by Rheinmetall-Borsig (Rh-B) in 1934 out of mild steel. Armament included a 7.5cm KwK L/24 main gun, 3.7cm KwK L/45 cannon and two 7.92mm machine guns. Dragon has already produced two 1/72 scale kits of the Neubau-Fahrzeug that cover vehicle numbers 1 and 3-5. Now comes the final vehicle – Nr.2, a prototype that was used in a training school until its retirement in 1940. The kit includes a number of brand new parts that allow modelers to build this specific vehicle. While the turret looks similar to Nr.3, in fact it’s different, as evidenced by details such as the pattern of rivets on the top plate. The smaller turret is a new tooling as well, with its own distinctive shape. The exhaust pipes on the right fender are also unique to this prototypical vehicle. The entire upper hull is made from a single piece of while the intricate road wheels are assembled as one piece. Indeed, in contemporary wartime photos, items such as scissors binoculars and rangefinders are often seen. Dragon has produced stunning replicas of these two aforementioned apparatuses in 1/6 scale. The scissors binoculars (called Scnfernrohr in German) were not confined to artillery use, for they were commonly used for observation on the frontlines. The model perfectly mimics the real item - the binocular head can swivel and the ocular lenses are removable. The scissors periscope also comes with its own tripod with adjustable legs, or alternatively the legs can be folded up completely. The rangefinder, meanwhile, is no less detailed. The harness and straps authentically replicate those of the original, allowing it to be correctly worn on the chest by a 1/6 scale artilleryman from the extensive Dragon range. Such is the level of detail that even the screw heads and serial number are represented on this rangefinder. Both the rangefinder and scissors binoculars are complete plastic kits in their own right, and modelers will find they assemble with consummate ease.
