The kit depicts an Early-Production variant and it’s based on actual measurements from real tanks. Although it’s a small vehicle, Dragon’s 1/35 scale kit is brimming with detail, something facilitated by the widespread use of slide molds. In fact, every single sprue in the kit employs slide molds, which is an astounding achievement! For example, the turret is of single-piece construction, with the multi-directional slide mold allowing details such as rivets to be rendered. The commander’s cupola is a similar story. The one piece lower hull has the correct armor panels and bolts on it. The upper hull is also one piece, and the gun barrel has a hollow end. The road wheels, idlers, sprockets and return rollers are slide-molded too. The DS slide-molded track links are accurately replicated in miniature so as to incorporate side details. This is an extremely exciting subject from Dragon, and because the Ha-Go was used in such diverse locations, modelers can produce any scenario such as jungle-clad terrain or a Pacific island! The set features four separate soldiers, each distinctively dressed and armed. They reflect the range of clothing such as parkas, greatcoats, snow suits and reversible insulated winter suits that were available to soldiers, as well as a variety of different headgear. Their range of weaponry includes a brand new Gew 33/40 rifle, Gew 43 self-loading rifle, MG42 machine gun and anti-tank 8.8cm Raketenpanzerbrüchse. Dragon has followed up its earlier Mid-Production 1/35 scale kit of the Brummbär with another kit from the same period, though one featuring a coating of Zimmerit. Anti-magnetic layers of Zimmerit were applied to all vehicles prior to September 1944, so this inclusion makes the kit historically accurate. Modelers will also know that applying Zimmerit to a model is fraught with all kinds of challenges. Dragon’s latest kit thus offers convenience and accuracy, for the injection-molded texture and pattern is beautifully rendered using Dragon’s patented Zimmerit technique. This is obvious in the unique radial Zimmerit pattern on the front of the multi-directional slide-molded superstructure, for example. The kit incorporates separate metal side skirt elements that provide true-to-scale thickness and can be arranged to a modeler’s preferences. The brand new one-piece 40cm DS tracks were also especially prepared for the Mid-Production Brummbär. The distinctive Brummbär appeared in such battles as Kursk, Anzio, Normandy, Ardennes and the Warsaw Uprising, so it gives model-makers ample scope. The two wartime manufacturers of the small utility vehicle, Ford and Willys-Overland, produced a staggering total of 640,000 vehicles. This figure amounted to nearly 20% of all wheeled military vehicles built in the USA during the war. They were used in a multitude of functions by the US military, plus around 30% of all production was allocated to British and Soviet units via Lend Lease. Dragon is offering a novel version of this famous 1/4-Ton 4x4 Truck in 1/72 scale. Entitled “1/4-Ton 4x4 Armored Truck”, the plastic kit includes two complete vehicles that can be assembled to represent vehicles with armored plates added to the radiator grill and driver’s compartment to give greater protection against German small arms. These armor shields give the 1/4-Ton Truck a completely new appearance, with this vehicle type being commonly employed in the reconnaissance role. Despite being small in 1/72 scale, the models are highly detailed and Dragon’s well-known engineering excellence guarantees a satisfying build. Furthermore, the vehicles can be fitted with different weapons. Multiple armaments such as twin-mounted bazookas, a .50-cal machine gun or a .30-cal machine gun are available, and they can be mounted at the modeler’s discretion.
