Gulf war 25th anniversary battle set THE BOX CONTAINS: M1A1 Abrams - AH-1W Supercobra - T-62 - Mi-25 Hind-D On August 1990, the Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait without notice. The reaction was immediate with the United Nations that declared a Resolution placed economic sanctions on Saddam Hussein’s Government. More than 30 States, led by United States, deployed forces to create a Coalition with the purpose to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait. The war began with an aerial and a naval bombardment on 17 January 1991 and after 5 weeks it was followed by a ground assault on 24th February. After few days, the Coalition forces, led by General Norman Schwarzkopf, thanks to a clear technological superiority and an excellent level of co-ordination between the various armed forces involved, were able to defeat the Iraqi forces A cease-fire was declared 100 hours after the ground campaign started. This called for more effective antiaircraft systems than Germany hitherto possessed, which initially were often poorly protected halftracks. New self-propelled AA types were put into service, including the Flakpanzer IV. A new type was also planned – the Flakpanzer V "Coelian" from Rheinmetall - though it was never put into production due to the war's end and the lack of enough chassis for conversion. The Coelian featured a special armored turret that would protect the crew inside the vehicle. It used a standard Panther tank chassis upon which were mounted twin 3.7cm FlaK 43 cannons. Dragon is now offering a fine 1/72 scale model kits of this interesting-looking German AA vehicle. It features the dual antiaircraft guns mounted based on a Panther chassis. The fully enclosed turret is a brand new molding, carefully replicating the prototypical structure and the twin-barrel cannons mounted inside. The turret and gun system is made true to scale. Now Dragon is expanding the family with a brand new kit of the Sd.Kfz.263 built to an identical scale. The Sd.Kfz.263 was part of Germany’s successful 8-Rad (“eight-wheel”) Schwerer Panzerspa"hwagen (“heavy armored reconnaissance vehicle”) family. The 9.1-tonne Sd.Kfz.263 was designated a Funkspa"hwagen, a radio car, and as such it accommodated extra long-range radio equipment inside the fixed superstructure. It was used by reconnaissance units and had a top road speed of 85km/h. As well as a telescopic antenna, a large frame antenna was fitted above the superstructure to aid communications with headquarters and to help coordinate fighting units. Unlike the Sd.Kfz.232 on which it was based and that was armed with a 20mm cannon, this vehicle’s only armament was a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. It operated with a crew of five, including two dedicated radio operators. Only 240 Sd.Kfz.263 vehicles were produced, but one of its most famous users was Erwin Rommel. Dragon has produced a brand new tooling for the upper hull of this 1/72 scale plastic kit. The complex item with multi-faceted plates is made as a single piece thanks to the employment of CAD drawings and high-tech slide-molding techniques. This ensures that modelers have an accurate and easy-to-assemble hull on which to base their miniature masterpiece. The Sd.Kfz.263 model also features a new one-piece frame antenna that is finely produced in scale.
