La VW Typ 82 Kübelwagen si distinse fin da subito per le notevoli prestazioni su ogni tipo di percorso, nonostante l’esigua potenza e la trazione sulle sole ruote posteriori. Il progetto risaliva al Dicembre del 1939 ma all’inizio questa vettura non fu accolta con grande entusiasmo, le si rimproveravano la posizione posteriore del motore, raffreddato ad aria, e la mancanza della trazione integrale.
