Operation Overlord was the Allied master plan to wrest Europe from the clutches of Germany. More than three million Allied troops were put ashore at Normandy from 6 June 1944 onwards. A slow, grinding battle ensued for the next two months as American, British and Canadian troops established their bridgehead against strong opposition. When the breakout from Normandy finally came, it was spectacular in its speed. By September there were three Allied army groups fighting against German forces, and General Patton was racing his forces across France to the very border of Germany. Dragon’s latest 1/35 figure set features Allied soldiers that fought in this famous Battle for Monte Cassino. In fact, it is a truly multinational release, for the set can be adapted to suit New Zealanders, Poles, Indians or Gurkhas. This cosmopolitan kit is unprecedented in Dragon figure sets, for it features three head options for each of the four plastic figures. The remarkably sculpted head options include Caucasians, Sikhs and Gurkhas that allow figures from the four aforementioned nations to be represented according to the modeler’s wishes. Examples of the four nationalities are portrayed on the box top. Uniform details and personal gear are the same since these soldiers had such items in common. The kit is a completely new tooling and is sold under the Smart Kit label. This means it goes together with minimum fuss and is easy to assemble. At the same time, superb engineering ensures there’s no loss of accuracy or simplification of detail. The delicacy of the castings can be seen in elements like the hand wheels. The howitzer can be displayed in either travel or combat modes, and the aluminum gun barrel with fine rifling detail can be elevated at different angles. Dragon’s latest 1/35 scale figure set features four Gebirgsjäger soldiers from the Battle of Crete. The plastic German soldiers are sharply molded and their uniforms and personal equipment are accurately depicted. To suit them for summer combat in the Mediterranean, they are all wearing cotton shorts instead of their usual battledress. These shorts give the soldiers a unique appearance. On their heads are distinctive caps with the edelweiss emblem, while their feet are shod in typical mountain boots. They carry a complement of light weapons such as Kar98k rifles and an MP40 submachine gun. The poses of these Gebirgsjäger are lifelike, with two taking a brief rest from combat, while another two prepare to move further over the rough terrain.
