The new 1/72 scale item is a British tank – the famous Churchill. The Churchill, referred to officially as the Tank, Infantry, Mk IV (A22), was named after the British prime minister at the time of its design in WWII. The tank was heavily armored and it featured a long chassis with long track runs that enabled it to cross difficult terrain. The first Churchills were hastily churning off Vauxhall production lines in June 1941, within a year of the tank’s design in the aftermath of the humiliating Allied defeat in Europe. Dragon’s model portrays a Churchill Mk IV tank, a variant that featured a cast turret instead of the all-welded turret found on the visually similar Mk III. Its main armament was a QF 6 pounder gun. Weighing in at approximately 40 tonnes, the Churchill had a particularly slow top speed. The Mk IV was the most numerically common model of the Churchill, with 1,622 tanks produced. As the first Churchill kit from Dragon, the tank utilizes brand new moldings. Slide molds allow the upper hull and lower hull to each be made in one piece. This makes construction more straightforward and accurate. The suspension on the Churchill is complicated, but the kit designers have cleverly engineered the suspension system in a way that’s easy to assemble. The cast turret is made in one piece via multi-directional slide molds, and it perfectly captures the five-sided shape of the Mk IV turret. The muzzle of the 6 pounder gun is hollow thanks also to slide molding. Among the vanguard is a Late-Production Tiger I and an accompanying set of crewmen. The German Tiger I is one of the most recognizable tanks of WWII. With its thick armor and potent 8.8cm gun, it terrorized enemy soldiers and tankers. Dragon has produced a 1/72 scale Late-Production variant of this formidable AFV, and what’s special about the plastic model is the finely textured Zimmerit coating. The pre-molded Zimmerit is produced to an astounding level of craftsmanship, and it fortunately saves modelers the burden of having to apply the coating themselves. The Tiger I includes sharply detailed components, and it will be warmly welcomed as it sets a new benchmark for quality in this scale. As a special bonus, the kit includes a set of ‘tank ace’ figures. These figures have been downsized from a well-known 1/35 scale figure set, but they’re still remarkably detailed. The five figures are brand new toolings, and the crewmen can be adapted to many different dioramas, theaters or time periods, as selected by modelers. The figures may be grouped together on a Tiger as indicated in the box-top art, or they can be mix and matched with any other German tank type. A small number of this unarmored boat-like vehicle was built and they served on the Eastern Front. However, less well known is the vehicle designed as its successor – the Panzerfahre (abbreviated to "PzF"). The main difference with this vehicle was that it was armored, plus it was conveniently based on the chassis of a Panzer IV Ausf.F tank. Development of the Panzerfahre began in early 1941, and by mid-1942 Magirus had delivered two prototypes. The lightly armored, fully tracked vehicle had a boat-like bow and a propeller at the stern. The vehicle's main function was combat supply on land and in water. It could tow an amphibious trailer, or alternatively it could work in tandem with another Panzerfahre as a floating ferry platform capable of carrying a 24-ton load. However, as heavier tanks appeared on the scene, the Panzerfahre never went into production because of its inadequate payload. Dragon released a 1/35 scale kit of this fascinating vehicle a while back, and now it is being released in the smaller 1/72 scale. It depicts the first Panzerfahre prototype, and it makes clever use of parts from Dragon's Panzer IV models – for example, wheels, suspension and tracks. Meanwhile, all other parts are brand new in line with the unique nature of this vehicle. Details such as hull rivets are delicately rendered, while slide molds are widely used. Modelers will find this kit assembles easily. The finished item is a stunning vehicle, and the scale allows space for modelers to put it in a suitable diorama showing a river or riverbank. The newest 1/72 Panzer IV kit from Dragon is an Ausf.H type. Production of the Ausf.H variant commenced in April 1943, and improvements included an 80mm-thick glacis plate and a layer of Zimmerit paste to prevent the adhesion of anti-tank mines. Side skirts were also added to the hull and turret to enhance the vehicle’s protection. With all the new armor, the Panzer IV’s weight increased to 25 tonnes. This 1/72 scale plastic kit is a fantastic new offering, with the majority of its components being newly tooled parts. Examples include the complete turret, upper hull, fenders and Schurzen side skirts on the hull and turret. Utilizing research data and engineering experience with the larger 1/35 equivalent kit, the details on this Panzer IV are very accurately portrayed. The box supplies a generous selection of Cartograf decals that cover panzer divisions operating in locations such as the Eastern Front (e.g. Poland, Ukraine) and Normandy. These markings stand out, and will look impressive on a suitable diorama piece. Dragon has already released Pz.Kpfw.IV F, F2 and G kits, so the addition of the very popular Ausf.H comes as a welcome addition for modelers everywhere.
