This 45-tonne medium tank was also converted into a useful armored recovery vehicle known as the Berge-Panther, with nearly 350 examples produced. One particularly unusual vehicle to be created by the unit s.Pz.Abt.653 was a Berge-Panther fitted with a Panzer IV turret. The result was a command tank with a fixed turret, plus a name that was absolutely mind numbing: the Berge-Panther mit aufgesetztem Pz.Kpfw.IV turm als Befehlpanzer. The work was done as a field conversion by only one unit and it served with the aforementioned heavy tank destroyer battalion (originally equipped with Ferdinand and, later, Jagdtiger vehicles) on the Eastern Front in 1944. Dragon has such a new 1/72 scale kit of this special hybrid vehicle. The kit is based on a 1/35 scale kit released some time ago, but the retention of all the original detail means modelers are in for a real treat! As with the original conversion, it’s essentially a donor Panzer IV turret placed on a Berge-Panther chassis. Because the turret is fixed, there’s no rear stowage bin or rear armor. This allows the vehicle’s engine hatches to be shown open. In addition, the track links are made from DS for maximum detail. To keep this medium tank competitive on the battlefield, it received a number of improvements in armor and armament throughout its life. The Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.J, manufactured between March 1941 and July 1942, was the first model to feature 50mm-thick basic frontal armor. The rear and engine deck were also redesigned owing to the hull being lengthened. Late-Production models of the Ausf.J received the longer and more effective 5cm KwK38 gun of L/60 caliber. A total of 1,549 tanks of this mark were produced, ensuring it was widely used on both the Eastern Front and in North Africa. Dragon's brand new 1/72 scale kit of a Panzer III Ausf.J depicts a Late-Production variant. Utilizing developments and research from an earlier 1/35 scale Smart Kit counterpart, this model is another masterpiece of engineering and design. It's replete with a sizzling level of detail. This Panzer III J is fully detailed yet it offers a good balance of easy assembly through such features as DS tracks. The Ausf.J's use against T-34s and KV-1 tanks in Russia, or Grants and Valentines on North Africa's battlefields, provides modelers with ample inspiration in portraying this tank in a diorama. The latest item is a Type 95 Ha-Go light tank. Introduced into service in 1936, this armored vehicle weighing just 7.4 tonnes was designed primarily as an infantry support weapon. Indeed, it was the most common light tank used by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), with about 2,300 units manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It had a crew of three, and the main armament was a Type 94 37mm gun. Its maximum speed was 45km/h. The Type 95 Ha-Go participated in the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars that simmered along the Manchurian border in the 1930s. For example, a total of 35 Type 95 tanks from the 4th Tank Regiment of the 1st Tank Corps participated in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in July 1939. This 1/72 scale model allows modelers to represent a Ha-Go tank involved in this combat against Russia in northern China in 1939. The model makes widespread use of slide molds for elements such as the lower hull. The kit fits together with precision, and fine details such as a hollowed-out exhaust pipe are included. Furthermore, the kit offers a photo-etched exhaust muffler cover. This Type 95 Tank possesses some recognizable characteristics, including retooled running gear that features an additional road wheel between the main road wheels.
