Its first taste of combat was in 1983 when the ship fired approximately 300 five-inch rounds into Lebanon. Its 500 crew members also provided assistance after the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut. In 1990 the USS Virginia deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. During this conflict, the cruiser fired two Tomahawk missiles into Iraq, thereby achieving the longest combat firing of a Tomahawk up till that time. The 11,000-ton ship was eventually decommissioned in 1994. A 1/700 scale replica of the USS Virginia has recently joined Cyber Hobby new lineup of model kits. This release is most significant as it is the series’ very first modern subject, which obviously means all the parts are brand new toolings. This impressive kit is finely detailed - for example, the superstructure bears fine detail such as hoses and ladders molded in place even though it is only in 1/700 scale. The bridge itself is a product of a three-directional slide mold, indicating a high level of engineering excellence. A generous collection of photo-etched parts like radar antennas and railings provides finesse. As a modern vessel, the kit incorporates a number of new moldings to represent contemporary weapon systems. Thus the radar dishes, 5-inch Mk-45 lightweight guns, Tomahawk armored box launchers and twin Mk-26 Standard missile launchers are all newly tooled items. To exhibit this accomplished ship, the modeler has the option of building a full-hull or waterline-hull version. For collectors seeking a modern warship, this Cyber Hobby USS Virginia offers something unique. Per saperne di più

U.S.S. Princeton CVL-23. Dragon has launched a fantastic new large-scale ship down the slipway from its workshop. The new kit is a 1/350 scale rendition of USS Princeton (CVL-23), an Independence-class light aircraft carrier of the US Navy (USN). This ship was originally laid down as a Cleveland-class light cruiser, but it received a new role and was eventually commissioned on 25 February 1943. Its first combat tour was in the Pacific from August onwards in the region of places like Tarawa. Its next combat tour commenced in January 1944, and in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Princeton’s aircraft contributed 30 kills. The 13,000-ton carrier subsequently supported landings in Leyte in the Philippines in October 1944, where she was attacked by a lone Yokosuka D4Y “Judy” dive bomber. This Japanese aircraft dropped just a single bomb, but it was sufficient to cause a series of explosions and fires. Tragically, by evening the carrier was at the bottom of the Leyte Gulf. A total of 108 sailors lost their lives but 1,361 crewmen were rescued by other USN vessels. This new Smart Kit is logically based on Dragon’s earlier USS Independence (CVL-22), but it features numerous new parts. These include the port antiaircraft gun platform, the island walls and radar installation. The stern antiaircraft gun platform has been revised too. There are also a number of new photo-etched parts specifically for Princeton; these include radar antenna components. For greater versatility, modelers can elect to build a full-hull version or a waterline hull. To help populate this large ship, there are 18 appropriately scaled crewmen figures, as well as vehicles such as aircraft tugs. The complement of twelve aircraft is reproduced in transparent plastic, which allows easier painting and portrayal of cockpit glazing. This is an amazingly detailed and busy-looking model, and its quality is indeed fit for a prince! Per saperne di più

Cyber-Hobby continues to keep atop the crest of the wave of new 1/700 ship kits with a brand new release. Replete with all-new toolings comes HMS Daring (Item No. 7093), a Type 45 destroyer of the Royal Navy (RN). HMS Daring is the lead ship of this new Type 45 class of air defense destroyer, and it only entered RN service as recently as July 2009. Interestingly, this is the UK’s first new destroyer class since the 1970s, so it represents a big step forward in technology and capability. A total of six destroyers are to be constructed in total. Utilizing a streamlined stealth design, its main weapon systems include the PAAMS/Sea Viper air defense missile system, Sea Skua anti-ship missiles, RGM-84 Harpoon missiles, Sting Ray torpedoes, Oerlikon 30mm guns, Phalanx CIWS and a 4.5-inch Mk 8 Mod 1 gun. HMS Daring is home-ported at Portsmouth. Such a capable warship requires an equally remarkable model equivalent, and Cyber-Hobby has kindly obliged. As a new kit, all parts are formed from brand new molds created by the very latest in technological and engineering design. The 1/700 scale ship is reproduced in full detail, and the stealthy exterior is accurately proportioned. The enclosed radar tower is a sophisticated item, with the various antennas extending from it at the correct angles. Lethal weapon systems like the 4.5-inch gun and air defense system are also supplied in remarkable detail. Modelers will appreciate the level of detail found in this stunning ship kit, and when it is compared to the previously released Type 42 destroyer kit, the advances in design are obvious. HMS Daring goes a long way to modernizing the RN fleet, and the kit version of this modern and powerful destroyer does the same for the Cyber-Hobby series! Per saperne di più
