Dragon previously released a fine kit of the German Z39 destroyer, and it was enthusiastically received by modelers because of its accuracy and easy assembly. Dragon is now pleased to offer another 1/350 scale kit of the Z31 destroyer. This ship was one of the Zersto"rer 1936A (Mob) class, also known to the Allies as the Narvik-class destroyer. Instead of being named, these ships built after the commencement of WWII were known by their hull numbers Z23 to Z39. Thanks to their impressive 15cm guns, these ships were close to being light cruisers rather than destroyers. Z31 was laid down on 1 September 1940 and was commissioned on 11 April 1942. This ship was notable in that it initially featured a single forward-mounted gun, before being retrofitted with a twin turret in late 1942. Interestingly, this warship survived WWII and was taken by France as war booty in December 1945. It subsequently served in the French Navy as Marceau (Q 103) before being scrapped in 1958. Dragon’s model of this German warship is a Smart Kit, meaning it is incredibly well engineered to achieve maximum levels of accuracy and ease of assembly. Its 1/350 scale allows for an amazing level of detail to be incorporated. While some parts have been utilized from the earlier Z39 kit, many are newly created just for this particular destroyer. Examples of brand new components include the bridge, hull, search light and mines. Among the ships sunk on that tragic day was USS Arizona (BB-39), a powerful Pennsylvania-class battleship displacing 30,000 tons. The battleship had been transferred to Hawaii in April 1940 as a deterrent to Japanese territorial expansion. Ironically, Japanese aircraft sank her at anchor with the loss of 1,177 lives. The wreck of USS Arizona still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, straddled by a memorial to all those who died in the surprise attack. One of the aircraft types that the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) used to carry out the raid was the Nakajima B5N2 torpedo bomber. Known to the Allies as “Kate”, this Type 97 aircraft achieved some notable successes in the early part of the Pacific War. As the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack approaches, Dragon is launching a very practical set consisting of a 1/700 scale USS Arizona model as well as two “Kate” torpedo bombers protagonists. These two elements – battleship and aircraft - can once again meet in a head-on confrontation. The ship kit is the previously released Premium Edition item, which means it’s well endowed with photo-etched parts and metal barrels for the large naval guns. Clever engineering removes much of the hard work from assembly too. On the other hand, the two B5N2 aircraft are completely new items from new toolings. They are molded in transparent plastic so that modelers can paint them more easily and retain clear glazing for the cockpit canopies. Cyber-Hobby continues to keep atop the crest of the wave of new 1/700 ship kits with a brand new release. Replete with all-new toolings comes HMS Daring (Item No. 7093), a Type 45 destroyer of the Royal Navy (RN). HMS Daring is the lead ship of this new Type 45 class of air defense destroyer, and it only entered RN service as recently as July 2009. Interestingly, this is the UK’s first new destroyer class since the 1970s, so it represents a big step forward in technology and capability. A total of six destroyers are to be constructed in total. Utilizing a streamlined stealth design, its main weapon systems include the PAAMS/Sea Viper air defense missile system, Sea Skua anti-ship missiles, RGM-84 Harpoon missiles, Sting Ray torpedoes, Oerlikon 30mm guns, Phalanx CIWS and a 4.5-inch Mk 8 Mod 1 gun. HMS Daring is home-ported at Portsmouth. Such a capable warship requires an equally remarkable model equivalent, and Cyber-Hobby has kindly obliged. As a new kit, all parts are formed from brand new molds created by the very latest in technological and engineering design. The 1/700 scale ship is reproduced in full detail, and the stealthy exterior is accurately proportioned. The enclosed radar tower is a sophisticated item, with the various antennas extending from it at the correct angles. Lethal weapon systems like the 4.5-inch gun and air defense system are also supplied in remarkable detail. Modelers will appreciate the level of detail found in this stunning ship kit, and when it is compared to the previously released Type 42 destroyer kit, the advances in design are obvious.
