A total of approximately 15,000 of this vital aircraft were manufactured. One of the more novel versions was the Ju88A-6, which was basically a Ju88A-5 fitted with a balloon cutting device. It was intended to clear the way for a bomber force by cutting the tether cables of barrage balloons. The specific equipment involved a front-mounted fender terminating at the wingtips, with a cable-cutting device installed at each end. The apparatus weighed a total of 380kg, requiring a further 60kg counterweight to be fitted in the tail. Dragon has launched an impressive scale model of this particular aircraft. It is based on Dragon’s highly successful Ju88 1/48 series of kits, so quality and accuracy are ensured. The new balloon cutting device has been reproduced in photo-etched parts so that the thin frame is truly produced to scale and is accurately proportioned. Not only does it feature the fender and cutting devices, but a whole range of other photo-etched components provide upgraded detail. Some of these have even been pre-painted for the added convenience of modelers. On the original aircraft, the extra weight and drag caused the Ju88A-6 to be slow and sluggish, thus making it an easy target. They were soon withdrawn and converted back to standard bombers. In fact, the Bf109 holds the distinction of being the most widely produced fighter in history. Nearly 34,000 were produced up till April 1945! A range of wartime variants were developed, with the E (“Emil”) series being the first major redesign of this highly successful platform that wrought havoc on Allied and Russian opponents. Of the 561 E-4 aircraft built, 211 were of the E-4/B “Jabo” type. It was first used against shipping in the English Channel in July 1940, and it could carry a single 250kg bomb or four 50kg bombs. Based on previous Bf109s, this new Bf109E-4/B has resulted in precise detail and easy assembly for modelers of all skill levels. Every detail is accurately presented in plastic, and some parts such as the pilot’s seatbelt are even included as photo-etched metal items for superior realism. DS is also used for the landing-gear compartment to provide the necessary level of detail. The redesigned squared-off cockpit canopy is produced especially for this kit.
