ES-3A Shadow The ES-3A Shadow has been derived directly from the famous twin-engines anti-submarine Lockheed S-3 Viking. It was designed as a carrier-based, subsonic, all-weather, long-range, electronic reconnaissance aircraft with the specific purpose to replace the aging EA-3B Skywarrior starting from the beginning of '90s. Basically the ES-3A was developed on modified S-3A where an extensive set of electronic and modern sensors and communication tools replaced the submarine detection and maritime surveillance equipment. The new operating configuration has not changed the flight performance of Lockheed airframe. The ES-3A has in fact a good flight range and it is very reliable. The Hurricane was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin 12-cylinders, liquid-cooled, with more than 1,000 HP. The eight 7.7 mm Browning machine guns, which equipped it , guaranteed a good firepower. Although it was slower and more antiquated, for aerodynamic design, then the famous "colleague" with whom it shared the operational engagement during the Battle of Britain, however, was more robust, cheaper and easier to maintain and repair. On June 1940 the first Hurricane Mk I “Tropical” version, characterized by the adoption of the Vokes air filter, appeared. Several Hurricanes has been deployed in Malta and in North Africa. Parallel to the single-seat Mirage 2000,a twin-seat training version was released, which also serves as a nuclear attack aircraft. From this airpiane, exclusively used by the French Airforce for strategic missions, the Mirage 2000 D evolved, which is an all-weather interceptor of the French Air Force, which, until recently was lacking an advanced ground attack fighter. The F4 Corsair is considered to be one of the most successful carrier-based fighter aircraft to be developed during the Second World War, although, when it first came into service, the technical experts of the U.S Navy considered this large cantilever wing aircraft to be unsuitable for use on aircraft carriers. The Corsair obtained many outstanding aerial victories. In the Pacific Ocean theatre alone, the F4U shot down over 2,000 Japanese aircraft, with a loss of only 189 Corsairs, resulting in a kill / loss ratio which has never been equaled throughout history. BR.20 Cicogna. This aircraft first appeared in 1936 and was almost entirely built in metal. It became one of the most famous Italian medium bombers. The planes of the first series had their debut operationally in the Spanish Civil War with the 35th bomber Group “Le Cicogne” from which they took their name. In the same period the Japanese government order this aircraft for operation in ChinaIn 1939 the BR.20M appeared (M for "modificato" amended) on which there where several improvements and which had a different sharped nose. The BR.20's were placed with the various units of the Italian Royal Air Force and operated on almost all war fronts. In september 1940 the BR.20M's of the 13th and 43rd Bomber Wing took part in action, mainly at night, during the Battle of Britain operating from bases in Belgium, but were soon withdrawn as the situation in the Mediterranean worsened.
