To commemorate the impact of the world’s largest conflict up till that time, Dragon is releasing a collection of 1/48 scale aircraft kits featuring aircraft from that conflagration. WWI saw the widespread debut of aircraft in the combat role, giving rise to mass production, famous aces and the rapid development of fighter technology and of air warfare doctrine. A total of approximately 15,000 of this vital aircraft were manufactured. One of the more novel versions was the Ju88A-6, which was basically a Ju88A-5 fitted with a balloon cutting device. It was intended to clear the way for a bomber force by cutting the tether cables of barrage balloons. The specific equipment involved a front-mounted fender terminating at the wingtips, with a cable-cutting device installed at each end. The apparatus weighed a total of 380kg, requiring a further 60kg counterweight to be fitted in the tail. Dragon has launched an impressive scale model of this particular aircraft. It is based on Dragon’s highly successful Ju88 1/48 series of kits, so quality and accuracy are ensured. The new balloon cutting device has been reproduced in photo-etched parts so that the thin frame is truly produced to scale and is accurately proportioned. Not only does it feature the fender and cutting devices, but a whole range of other photo-etched components provide upgraded detail. Some of these have even been pre-painted for the added convenience of modelers. On the original aircraft, the extra weight and drag caused the Ju88A-6 to be slow and sluggish, thus making it an easy target. They were soon withdrawn and converted back to standard bombers.
