The Thunderbolt (also called Warthog) was practically built around its remarkable 30 mm gun GAU-8, which can perforate tank armour with its special high performance ammunition. The aircraft was widely used during the Gulf War, where it successfully destroyed a few hundred Iraqui vehicles with minimum losses despite the heavy enemy defense of conventional and missile fire power. This characteristic “inverted gullwing” aircraft became famous at the early stages of the war, when Germany had virtual air superiority. Later on the planes’s limits became obvious. The Stukas were then used as troop support aircraft on the Eastern front, where its robust fuselage proved to be quite adequate. Furthermore the “Ariete”, as the RE 2002 was called, had a good storage capacity, able to carry bombs as heavy as 500 kg. The squadrons equipped with this aircraft saw a great deal of action against the Allied fleet invading Sicily in 1943.
