BR.20 Cicogna. This aircraft first appeared in 1936 and was almost entirely built in metal. It became one of the most famous Italian medium bombers. The planes of the first series had their debut operationally in the Spanish Civil War with the 35th bomber Group “Le Cicogne” from which they took their name. In the same period the Japanese government order this aircraft for operation in ChinaIn 1939 the BR.20M appeared (M for "modificato" amended) on which there where several improvements and which had a different sharped nose. The BR.20's were placed with the various units of the Italian Royal Air Force and operated on almost all war fronts. In september 1940 the BR.20M's of the 13th and 43rd Bomber Wing took part in action, mainly at night, during the Battle of Britain operating from bases in Belgium, but were soon withdrawn as the situation in the Mediterranean worsened. This sleak twin-engine plane is an evolution of the ME-210 which was supposed to substitute the M-110 as a heavy fighter plane. This plan did not materialize due to serious problems with the aircraft’s engines. All of this resulted in a series of modifications which ended with the realization of the Model 410. Yet, despite all the improvements, the airplane inherited some technical problems which made sufficient distribution to all the various Luftwaffe units impossible. The idea of installing a Junkers Jumo 213A engine (until then mainly used on bombers) in a Focke-Wulf 190 airframe was born of a need to improve the high altitude performance of the aircraft: the A and F versions, in fact, suffered a significant drop in speed above 7,000m. Armed with two 20mm cannon and two 13mm guns, the D-9 was immediately a favourite with pilots, who considered it an aircraft equal to the P-51 Mustang. Per saperne di più
