Designed in the 1960s, the Mil Mi-24 holds a special place within the gunship fraternity. Bristling with weapons the robust D version is one of the most powerful attack helicopters in the world. Thanks to two powerful engines and a slender fuselage this Flying Fortress is very manoeuvrable and can achieve a top speed of over 330 km/h (205 mph) even with a full weapon load. This Soviet designed and heavily armored attack helicopter became well known during the wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya and was widely used by the forces of the Warsaw Pact. The Hind D is equipped with a 12.7 mm heavy MG in a chin turret - Swatter guided missiles and rocket pods can be carried on outer stations of the stub wings. The 24 D - NATO codename Hind - has been in military front-line service since the mid-70s. It was designed for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. Thousands of UH-ls are in service as transport, ambulance and attack aircraft. Licensed production in Italy, Germany and Japan make it part of the armed and police forces of more than fifty nations. Presently twin-engine versions (Italeri kit no. 847) are being produced. The Bell OH-58 Kiowa, is not only one of the most famous helicopter in history but is also characterized by an extraordinary longevity and flexibility. The OH-58 has been in continuous use by the U.S. Army, with several versions, since 1969. Derived directly from 206 Jet Ranger model, OH-58 Kiowa was used to perform reconnaissance, observation and advanced tactical support duties. OH-58D series was the result of several developments such as the adoption of a more powerful engine, the introduction of the 4-blade rotor, and the use of MMS above it. The latest version, the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, is primarily operated in an armed reconnaissance role in support of ground troops thanks to the adoption of two side pylons capable of carrying different combinations of weapons such as AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, Hydra rockets or air-to-air Stinger missiles. Between 1965 and 1968, forty-three HAS.1 models were upgraded to the new standard, easily recognisable for the dorsal dome of the search radar that gave the HAS.3 its nickname “Camel”.Apart from this aspect, the modifications focussed mainly on the flight stabilisation system and the mission equipment, including the more effective Plessey sonar. The weaponry for anti-submarine missions typically consisted of Mk.44 torpedoes, or Mk.11 depth charges.Starting in the mid-1970s, the Wessex HAS.3 was gradually replaced by the Sea King, though it remained in service long enough to participate in the Falklands War.
