The Hornet is the most modern fighter/bomber in service to-day. Due to the flexibility of its electronics it is able to operate as an air superiority fighter. At the same time it can also carry out night bombing missions. The F/A-18 is in service with the U.S. Navy, the Marines and the Australian, Canadian and Spanish Forces. The Grumman Corporation developed and designed the A-6A, based on U.S. Navy specifications, a twin jet-engine all-weather medium attack aircraft able to operate from the American aircraft carriers. The so called “Intruder” was characterized by a sturdy and robust fuselage and for the two seats side by side cabin configuration for the pilot and the weapons officer. The A-6E was the definitive attack version of the "Intruder" improved in avionics and attack systems, in particular in the version named TRAM, from the acronym of the laser target designation system, that allowed to be more effective to perform “all weather” missions and to be more lethal in detection and suppression of enemy targets. Thanks to its hardpoints under the wing the A-6E Intruder was able to load an impressive offensive armament as conventional bombs, Paveway laserg-guided bombs, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, HARM anti-radar missiles. The Douglas Skyraider was manufactured immediately after War World II. Despite its traditional piston motor, in an age when jets were spreading, the Skyraider had an extraordinary long career. It made its first flight in 1945 and it was retired from service only in 1975. It has participated to several conflicts, demonstrating its value in Korea and in Vietnam. Characterised by low speed manoeuvrability, it was able to transport impressive war cargos of over 3,500Kg. Perfect for ground attack missions, it was provided with robust armour to minimise fire damages from the enemy. France used more than 100 Skyraiders, many of which took part to the Algerian war, replacing the old T-6 Texan as insurgency aircraft and close support. The Mi-24 is one of the most powerful combat and attack helicopters available today, despite the fact of being in service for more than 20 years. Built according to Soviet Military philosophy, which make these choppers true flying "battle ships" with great fire power to support helicopter attack forces. The A-10 Thunderbolt II was developed by Fairchild Republic in the seventies with the purpose to create, accordingly the needs of USAF, a powerful aircraft capable to perform close air support missions including attacking tanks and armoured vehicles. The Thunderbolt II is heavily armoured and exceptionally tough. It is characterised by the two General Electric turbofan engines and the adoption of one of the most powerful aircraft gun ever flown : the 30 mm. GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling. Thanks to its eleven underwing and under fuselage pillars, the A-10 can carry an impressive offensive pay-load.
