Most of Israeli pilots that have achieved the “aces” qualification were in service from the 60s, participating in the “Six-day war” in 1967 and in the aerial battles which followed in 1969-70, culminating in the “Yom Kippur war” of 1973, with the Mirage III fighter plane. Many of them remained in service moving on to other types of aircrafts which progressively were handed to the units: F-4 Phantom, Nesher and then F-16. This box is dedicated to some of these pilots that achieved part of their victories with the Mirage III between 1967 and 1973. The Thunderbolt (also called Warthog) was practically built around its remarkable 30 mm gun GAU-8, which can perforate tank armour with its special high performance ammunition. The Hellcat entered service in 1943 and quickly became the standard fighter of the American Navy. Although initially used only as a fighter, it was later used an as air support aircraft for troops, using various size bombs and air-to-surface rockets. The supersonic interceptor aircraft F-104 Starfighter was, without doubts, one of the most famous, and long-lasting, aircraft in History. The F-104 entered in service in the late ‘50s and served with USAF for a long time. Later on, it has formed the fighter squadrons of several NATO air forces for more than 40 years. For instance the Italian Air Forces used the F-104, constantly updated in avionics, technology and weapon systems, until the mid of 2000s, replaced with the Eurofighter Typhoon : a real generation gap. The F-104 story and its ability to surprise are continuing nowadays thanks to private companies, such as Starfighters Inc. The company is located in the United States and operates the largest supersonic fleet owned by private organization. Its real strength, however, was represented by the low production and maintenance costs compared to a good combat effectiveness. Thanks to its cost / performance ratio the F-5E was chosen to equip the fighter squadrons of several air forces. Among these countries, the Swiss Air Force considered the F-5E suitable to meet the real unique features of which the Alpine Country needed. It was also produced under license by the Helvetic country. From the single-seat F-5E, the two-seat trainer F5-F has been directly derived.
