The Vergeltungswaffe 2 ("Retaliation Weapon 2", or V-2) was one of Germany's wonder weapons, and it was certainly revolutionary at the time. It holds the distinction of being the world’s first long-range ballistic missile, and rockets were used widely against London and later Antwerp. Indeed, more than 3,000 V-2s were launched from September 1944 onwards, resulting in the deaths of some 7,250 people. The V-2 was also known technically as the A4, and it was the progenitor of all modern rockets. A V-2 could reach a maximum altitude of 88km before beginning its ballistic free-fall trajectory. One of the key designers behind the liquid-fuelled rocket project was Wernher von Braun. The FB.5 featured a Goblin II turbojet engine with armored protection. In addition, the wings were shortened by 30cm and the undercarriage was given a longer stroke to permit greater takeoff weights and more clearance for under-wing munitions. The new item depicts a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, a carrier-based dive-bomber widely used by the US Navy (USN) during WWII. The twin-seat SB2C was roundly criticized for its handling characteristics, range and reliability, but nevertheless it achieved good results in combat after improvements were made during the course of production. It participated in such battles as Rabaul, the Marianas, the Philippines, Taiwan, Iwo Jima, the Ryuku Islands and Okinawa. One of its strengths was the ability to carry a significant amount of munitions, plus it featured an internal bomb bay. Some 7,140 Helldivers were manufactured, but the variant portrayed in this kit is the SB2C-4, numerically the most common type. Introduced in mid-1944, the SB2C-4 incorporated perforated dive flaps and wing racks for eight 5-inch rockets or 1,000lb bombs. More than 2,000 SB2C-4 Helldivers were produced by Curtiss, and it was more successful than earlier variants. This is in fact the very first 1/72 scale item in Cyber-Hobby’s refined Wing-Tech series, and it broadens the scope of successful 1/32 and 1/48 items already available. As such, the SB2C-4 employs high-tech innovations and widely uses slide molds. This enables excellent levels of detail and easy construction. Panel lines are sharply etched into the plastic components. The Sea Vixen was a twin-boom jet fighter used by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy in the 1960-70s, and this carrier-based aircraft could travel at speeds of up to 1,110km/h. Following on from Cyber-Hobby’s kit of a twin-seat Sea Vixen FAW.1 (FAW denotes ‘Fighter All Weather’), this latest kit represents an FAW.2 variant. As successor to the FAW.1, it possessed many improvements such as an enlarged tail boom allowing additional fuel tanks, an improved escape system and more space for electronic countermeasures systems. The FAW.2 entered frontline squadrons in 1964 and some 29 new-build aircraft were produced as well as 67 FAW.1s converted. The Sea Vixen was withdrawn from service in 1972. Just like Cyber-Hobby’s recent FAW.1 kit, this 1/72 scale model makes extensive use of slide molds to create a harmonious blend of detail and ease of assembly. The fuselage is a complex shape because of the twin tail booms, but very judicious engineering and clever parts separation mean all the components fit together perfectly. The newly tooled fuel tanks accommodated on both wings are delicately reproduced. The cockpit for the pilot, which is offset towards the port side, is featured correctly, and the upper fuselage has been updated to include the correct top hatch for the observer. The Battle of Midway (4-7 June 1942) was the defining naval engagement of the Pacific Campaign during WWII. It occurred just six months after Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and resulted in a decisive victory for the US Navy (USN). The battle resulted in the loss of four Japanese aircraft carriers, a heavy cruiser, 248 carrier-borne aircraft and 3,057 sailors, a costly blow the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and its shipbuilding industry couldn’t recover from. One historian even called it “the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare.” The IJN attacked Midway Atoll and sought to sweep the USN into oblivion via an ambush. However, the US had been able to break Japanese codes and so the USA sprung its own trap on the Japanese! Cyber-Hobby is proud to announce the release of a 1/72 scale kit of a Japanese Aichi D3A dive-bomber that took part in this fierce battle. Cyber-Hobby has done a sterling job on this 1/72 dive-bomber kit. This time it comes with brand new Cartograf decals that offer a splendid selection of markings suitable for aircraft participating in the Battle of Midway. It uses the same toolings that were created using highly advanced CAD techniques, and the result is an amazingly detailed aircraft. The engine and cockpit are both fully represented. Due to its primary role as a dive-bomber, the model sensibly comes with a payload of a 250kg bomb. And as a carrier-borne aircraft, its 14.37m-wide wings could be folded up to save space. This feature too is carried over into the model; builders can select whether they want the plane to have folded or extended wings.
