Germany designed a number of different self-propelled howitzers during WWII, but not all of them reached production. One of the more interesting types was the le.FH.18/40/2 auf.Pz.III/IV Sfl. With a name as convoluted as this, unsurprisingly it isn’t widely known! However, Dragon is giving this weapon carrier an enormous popularity boost by being the first manufacturer to create a 1/35 scale plastic kit of the weapon system! Basically the 25-ton vehicle mounted a 10.5cm le.FH.18/40/2 infantry gun in a fighting compartment, although it also carried gun trails and wheels on the rear of the hull so that the howitzer could be removed and used as a towed howitzer too. Alkett / Rheinmetall-Borsig completed a prototype in March 1944 in direct competition to Krupp’s Heuschrecke 10. It was eventually decided that it would be based on a Geschutzwagen IV (Hummel) chassis, and it was designed to carry 80 ammo rounds and operate with a five-man crew. The newest release adds to this legend with a modern military set featuring a Soviet BRDM-2 (or BRDM-3) plus Soviet crewmen. The BRDM is a well-known Soviet armored reconnaissance vehicle, and it was exported to a wide range of countries. The 4x4 vehicle had a four-man crew, and mobility was aided by a centralized tire inflation system and by fitting belly wheels that could be lowered for cross-country driving. Powered by a GAZ-41 V8 engine, the BRDM-2 was amphibious thanks to a water jet in the rear hull. The vehicle’s armament was the same as the BTR-60PB – a 14.5mm KPVT heavy machine gun and a coaxial 7.62mm PKT machine gun mounted in a turret. The BRDM-2 entered Red Army service in 1962 and production continued until 1989, by which time 7,200 vehicles had been produced. This Orange Box set allows modelers to build either a 1/35 scale BRDM-2 or BRDM-3 model. The latter designation describes the 9P124 variant of the BRDM-2. This anti-tank vehicle carried four 9M17M Skorpion-M antitank guided missiles (ATGM) also known by their NATO reporting name of AT-2B Swatter B. The ATGM launcher unit was elevated above the hull for firing. This popular plastic kit was produced by Dragon some time ago, which means they’re extremely difficult to get hold of nowadays. This release is thus very welcome, boosted by the fact that it comes with a set of five Soviet crewmen. The various realistic poses allow a range of diorama possibilities. Germany created a number of successful schwerer Panzerspahwagen (“heavy armored reconnaissance vehicles”). An important family of vehicles in this class was the Sd.Kfz.234. Design work commenced in August 1940 and the Sd.Kfz.234 had four distinct variants, the last of which was the Sd.Kfz.234/4. It is this 8-wheeled vehicle that is the subject of Dragon’s newest 1/35 scale plastic kit. Reflecting the state of the war by that stage, this 6m-long vehicle was more of a tank hunter than a reconnaissance vehicle. It boasted a complete 7.5cm PaK 40 L/46 anti-tank gun installed in the open-topped fighting compartment, though the gun’s traverse was limited to 12° either side. Only 89 vehicles were produced by Büssing-NAG between December 1944 and March 1945, but they were employed on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Per saperne di più

Dragon has created an Early Production (i.e. G1) version of the Jagdpanther in 1/35 scale. As such it has the smaller internally bolted mantlet, a monobloc gun barrel and an engine deck based on that of the Panther Ausf.A. The aforementioned mantlet is produced by a four-directional slide mold that bears a realistic cast texture. What sets this latest release apart is its coat of Zimmerit, which was applied to Jagdpanthers up till September 1944. The typical square-pattern Zimmerit is astonishingly rendered in 1/35 scale. Zimmerit is also correctly pre-molded on the lower hull, saving modelers the burden of this undertaking. Even the stowage boxes at the rear of the hull receive a Zimmerit layer. To finish off this fine Jagdpanther, Dragon has supplied two complete runs of easy-to-assemble DS Tracks suitable for this Early Production variant.
