Il più noto dei carri realizzati per contrastare i nuovi e pesantemente corazzati mezzi tedeschi fu il Joseph Stalin JS-2. Armato con il potente cannone da 122 mm D-25T installato nella torretta montata in posizione centrale si caratterizzava per lo scafo in acciaio fuso, per la pesante blindatura e per l’adozione del motore diesel a 12 cilindri da oltre 600 HP.
