One wheeled family of vehicles introduced in 1936 included 4x4 armored cars known as the Leichter Panzerspa"hwagen, which translates as “Light Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle.” Powered by a Horch engine, these vehicles were based on a Horch 801 heavy car chassis to which an armored body was added. Early in WWII it performed well enough as a reconnaissance vehicle for panzer divisions, although its off-road capability let it down. The base model was the Sd.Kfz.221, but Dragon is introducing a model of the derivative known as the Sd.Kfz.222. The latter vehicle is armed with a 2cm KwK.30 L/55 cannon and MG34 machine gun in an open-top turret. Three men operated the Sd.Kfz.222. Interestingly, as well as being operated by China, a dozen Sd.Kfz.222 armored cars were also sold to China. At the last Tokyo Hobby Show, Dragon announced a whole new series of 1/72 scale kits. The first of these is the famous little Sd.Kfz.222. As a special introductory offer, Dragon is including two complete Sd.Kfz.222 models in the box. The two vehicles are supplied with different markings. These kits make use of Dragon’s highest engineering expertise, meaning the armored car is well designed and easily assembled. The mesh that covers the turret is supplied as a photo-etched part so that it remains true to scale. The Type 2 was the first amphibious tank used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). It was designed for Japanese landing forces performing amphibious invasions of Pacific islands that didn’t have regular port facilities. Production commenced in 1942 and a total of 184 Type 2 amphibious tanks were made, although the design was too late to participate in Japan’s island-hopping campaign. When used in water, large pontoons were attached to the glacis plate and rear deck to give it a top speed of 10km/h. These pontoons could be shed as soon as it reached land. The turret featured a 3.7cm Type 1 gun and coaxial Type 97 machine gun. Dragon’s 1/72 scale kit uses 100% new toolings. Fully utilizing Dragon’s technological expertise, the result is another masterpiece of accurate kit engineering. The upper hull and lower hull components are both made as single pieces thanks to the employment of slide molds. The kit is closely based on measurements taken from a surviving tank on Peleliu (present-day Palau). This ensures that the kit of the Type 2 tank without its flotation pontoons is accurately dimensioned. The Ka-Mi also includes DS tracks for easy assembly of the complicated track links. Now, Dragon has shrunk the same vehicle down to 1/72 scale, but fortunately without sacrificing any details. The SAS, formed in July 1941 by David Stirling, was a commando force designed to operate deep behind enemy lines, something it did very successfully in North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe. In fact, in Europe the small band of SAS members inflicted 7,733 German casualties, captured 4,784 prisoners, destroyed 700 vehicles and cut 164 railway lines. The new 1/72 scale model kit shows a 1/4-Ton 4x4 Truck of the SAS modified for ETO missions. The vehicle is heavily loaded with extra fuel to allow reconnaissance missions deep behind enemy lines. The SAS vehicle is heavily armed with fast-firing Vickers K machine guns ready for use against ground or aerial targets. A Bren gun mounted near the driver's seat is also included. These weapons are all newly tooled with sophisticated levels of detail. This exciting kit is accurately made, and this SAS vehicles is ready to wreak havoc across enemy-occupied Europe! Dragon’s newest 1/72 scale kit set features an Sd.Kfz.251/7 Ausf.D and four German panzergrenadiers. As far as possible, this set reflects the original scenes photographed on 18 December 1944. The four figures are completely new toolings, and benefit from the level of detail that was incorporated in their 1/35 scale ‘brothers’. The grenadiers are depicted enjoying a cigarette in a lull after their successful ambush. Each is well researched and sculpted to carry as much detail as possible in this scale, with a great variety shown in their uniform items. The soldiers are accompanied by the Pioneer variant of the famous Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack, complete with assault-bridge sections. This kit is finely detailed, and offers possibilities such as the rear doors or vision ports being left open or closed. Convenience has been guaranteed with features such as DS tracks and road wheels that are molded as a set. This novel set recreates the events of that historic day in this otherwise obscure Belgian village! In a desperate last gamble, Hitler sent massed German units through the forested Ardennes terrain in an attack against Allied forces in the Battle of the Bulge. One small event that played out during the epic battle was the fighting in the small Belgian village of Poteau, a junction where the roads from Recht and St Vith meet en route to Vielsalm. On 17 December 1944 this village was the site of a huge traffic bottleneck as American troops moved to take up defensive positions while stragglers retreated from the fighting. Kampfgruppe Hansen attacked and captured the village on the morning of 18 December, and later that day the German soldiers succeeded in ambushing a convoy from the U.S. 14th Cavalry Group. The two wartime manufacturers of the small utility vehicle, Ford and Willys-Overland, produced a staggering total of 640,000 vehicles. This figure amounted to nearly 20% of all wheeled military vehicles built in the USA during the war. They were used in a multitude of functions by the US military, plus around 30% of all production was allocated to British and Soviet units via Lend Lease. Dragon is offering a novel version of this famous 1/4-Ton 4x4 Truck in 1/72 scale. Entitled “1/4-Ton 4x4 Armored Truck”, the plastic kit includes two complete vehicles that can be assembled to represent vehicles with armored plates added to the radiator grill and driver’s compartment to give greater protection against German small arms. These armor shields give the 1/4-Ton Truck a completely new appearance, with this vehicle type being commonly employed in the reconnaissance role. Despite being small in 1/72 scale, the models are highly detailed and Dragon’s well-known engineering excellence guarantees a satisfying build. Furthermore, the vehicles can be fitted with different weapons. Multiple armaments such as twin-mounted bazookas, a .50-cal machine gun or a .30-cal machine gun are available, and they can be mounted at the modeler’s discretion. An Sd.Kfz.260 was released a short time ago, and now Dragon is offering yet another interesting variant. This time it is an Sd.Kfz.261. The Sd.Kfz.260 and 261 were similar in that they were both designed for signals units, with a total of 493 produced from November 1940 through till April 1943. They were designed specifically as armored (but unarmed) radio communication vehicles. The Sd.Kfz.261 was fitted with a FuG.12 long-range radio set connected to a frame antenna and also a telescopic antenna. In due course the Sd.Kfz.260/261 family was replaced by halftrack radio vehicles. Dragon's 1/72 scale model makes use of the newly tooled Sd.Kfz.260. It has brand new parts such as the frame antenna and the exquisitely produced telescopic antenna mounted on the left side of the hull. These radio components provide the Sd.Kfz.261 with a unique silhouette and cause it to really stand out from other members of the Leichter Panzerspahwagen family. The hull-top opening is made of plastic, this material being much easier to work with than photo-etched parts. This led to a dire need for more antiaircraft vehicles for ground forces, and early efforts at producing a Flakpanzer centered on utilizing the Panzer IV chassis. However, the famous German Panther medium tank was also used as a platform for developmental work, with the Coelian perhaps being the best-known example. In May 1943, a proposed Rheinmetall design showed two pairs of Vierling MG151/20 antiaircraft cannons mounted in a Turm Panther II. This turret was heavily armored and it featured the pairs of cannons offset from each other and mounted at different heights. This Flakpanther 341 mit 2cm Flakvierling design never advanced much further…except in terms of Dragon’s superb new 1/72 scale plastic kit! The kit uses the finely detailed chassis of previous kits, to which are added a brand new turret and flak cannons. Parts fit together accurately, as is to be expected of Dragon’s high engineering standards. Although this particular antiaircraft vehicle never entered production, it makes for a fascinating modeling subject that gives plenty of scope for customization and creativity. One version was the Stuka zu Fuss mounting the Wurfrahmen 40 rocket launcher system, ideal for providing a heavy bombardment capability to panzergrenadier units. Dragon is now going to release such a vehicle in Ausf.D version. The Ausf. D hull featured a simplified construction, thus making production easier for Germany’s overstrained industry. This 1/72 scale Sd.Kfz. 251 halftrack model is highly detailed with accurate dimensions. The six rocket launcher frames mounted on the hull are reproduced by new photo-etched parts. The Stuka zu Fuss offered a heavy weapon to German motorized units, and Dragon's offers modelers an excellent new choice in halftracks!
