Dragon’s latest 1/35 scale figure set features four elite German soldiers from the Brandenburg unit. These soldiers are the products of brand new toolings, and they are depicted in heavy combat with the defenders of Leros. The centerpiece of the set is a machine gun team equipped with an MG42 weapon. The gunner is using the shoulder of his assistant as a support as the team hasn’t had time to set up the weapon’s tripod yet. The folded tripod is included in the set. Meanwhile, the two other Brandenburgers dressed in appropriate camouflage smocks are preparing to move forward to capture more territory in Leros. Of interest, the set includes a German weapon container of the type that accompanied paratroopers during airdrops. Dragon’s newest 1/35 scale figure set portrays German soldiers from Operation Typhoon. The figures are bundled up against the freezing cold winter weather that made conditions even more hazardous. Typical of the period, and Germany’s ill-preparedness for winter warfare, the four soldiers are wearing a wide range of clothing. A general has a sheepskin coat on, attire that’s rarely produced in 1/35 scale. The poses are extremely vivid, and one can almost feel the cold seeping through their clothing and the snow flurries blowing against them. These well-sculpted figures could be used individually in a vignette, or grouped together in a winter scene. This was the first severe winter that German troops encountered, and this set perfectly conveys the grueling nature of the ultimately unsuccessful Operation Typhoon. Per saperne di più

The four soldiers are all very different as they belong to various units. There is a Reiter (“cavalryman”), a Feldgendarmerie (military policeman), a Panzer-Pionier (combat engineer), and an SS-Oberschutze (“senior private”) from the famed Totenkopf Division. They are all wearing different uniform items in keeping with their functions. The Feldgendarmerie, for example, is wearing the rubberized protective coat issued to motorcycle riders. He also wears the MP gorget on a chain around his neck. Each figure is fully equipped with weapons made to the very latest Gen 2 standards. The range of weaponry includes MP28 and MP38 submachine guns, a Kar98k rifle and a captured Czech machine gun. To help him do his job, the Panzer-Pionier also has a Rohrladung Stahl 3kg (explosive charge similar to a “Bangalore torpedo”) and Nb.K.39 smoke canister. This new figure set will prove extremely versatile, for the figures can be dropped into not only an Sd.Kfz.7, but any other kind of halftrack from Dragon’s 1/35 range. The figures will feel equally at home in any German soft-skin vehicle too. Each figure is realistically posed, with details crisply molded and rendered. The kit offers total 10 figures in casual attire wearing caps and without any belts or Y-straps. he box-top illustration shows two Soviet soldiers dressed for winter combat with such uniform gear as a greatcoat, fur hats and a snowsuit. Their weapons include a Mosin-Nagant rifle and a ubiquitous PPSh-41 submachine gun. One Russian is smoking a cigarette during a lull in the fighting, and this classic pose makes this figure a suitable candidate for a standalone vignette. The two Germans are also outfitted to resist the severe weather conditions. One is delivering food supplies (bread, food container and water canteens) to the frontline while the other is firing an MP40 submachine gun. The interesting mix of action and at-rest poses are very suitable for depicting an Eastern Front scene in the snow and ice, and the plastic sculpting is sharp and realistic. As the Soviet T-34 tank rumbled along the snow-coated street, its steel track treads crumbled the rubble into powder. Lurking in the shadows, a figure raised his weapon and took careful aim at the monstrous steel hulk bearing down on him. Suddenly he fired, the Ofenrohr (“Stove Pipe”) emitting a large cloud of smoke. A rocket streaked towards the tank and penetrated its sloped armor, the vehicle clanking to a stop as flames and smoke erupted from its interior. The German tank hunter team quickly scuttled away to find a new position. This type of scene was repeated over and over as German defenses were inundated by Soviet and Allied tanks in the latter part of WWII. With a dire shortage of tanks and tank destroyers, one smaller but still effective German weapon was the Panzerschreck (“tank terror”) or Raketenpanzerbu"chse (“rocket tank rifle”, or RPzB). This antitank rocket launcher of 88mm caliber, from which the American bazooka was copied, was employed by infantry. Dragon’s newest figure set offers two Panzerschreck teams, one wearing winter uniforms and the other attired in summer uniforms. Their versatility allows them to be used for either Eastern or Western Front dioramas. As a Gen2 set, the figures are crisply detailed and have anatomically vivid poses. Likewise, their associated gear is sharply molded. Their RPzB 54 weapons with characteristic blast shields are amazingly detailed, the most accurate yet thanks to their Gen2 status.
